UK: Extinction Rebellion call for end to London Fashion Week
A group of Extinction Rebellion activists staged a protest in London on Saturday, to demand the cancellation of London Fashion Week.
Protesters blocked streets leading to one of the Fashion Week venues, bringing along banners, flares and posing in dress frames made from chains.
"The fashion industry is in the top three of polluters, and not only does it have a massive climate change impact, it also has a massive ecological impact. They are racing through resources like there's no tomorrow and I guess we are just kind of scared", explained demonstrator Tasmin.
"The British Fashion Council, who run London Fashion Week, have huge influence. If they started putting pressure on government to regulate the industry, then you could see real change happen really quickly", she added.
The event on Facebook criticised the fashion industry of accounting for 7 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions, with the overall impact of the industry predicted to rise by 49 per cent by 2030.
