Alaska health officials report as of Oct. 22, 75 cases of infectious syphilis have been reported to the Alaska Section of Epidemiology (SOE) during 2018. This is the largest syphilis outbreak to have occurred in Alaska in at least four decades. Eighty-five percent of cases were in Anchorage and nearly nine out 10 were reported in men. Of the males, 83% (55/66) reported being gay, bisexual, or other men who have sex with men (MSM). Thirteen farm animals are dead after coming into contact with dormant anthrax spores on a farm near Fort St. John. The Ministry of Agriculture says there is no public health risk and it is rare for the disease to spread from livestock to humans. According to the ministry, more than a dozen bison are thought to have contracted the disease after being exposed to naturally occurring bacteria in the soil of a feeding site. Officials say 19 students were on board a school bus involved in a wreck just outside Austin. The accident happened just before 8 a.m. on Highway 71 at Tucker Hill Lane. Bastrop ISD says 19 students headed to high school and middle school were on the bus at the time. Eight students were taken to a hospital by ambulance, and two others were taken by their parents. Three workers at a Connecticut transfer station were taken to the hospital after being exposed to potentially hazardous fumes. Fire officials say there was some sort of chemical reaction in a trash container at the Canton town transfer station at about 8 a.m. Tuesday and the workers inhaled the fumes.
