Protesters & Cafe Owner At Odds Over Letter About Homelessness – CBS Denver

Hi Eric you may have to drop a few lines (the underlined) because they may not want to admit full liability for any employee grievances, but theres nothing too outlandish in the rest of the draft, and if they claim they are unaware of the facts contained in the draft, perhaps you should post him some literature or take it in then he cannot deny knowledge of the situation. :) #peace

CBS4 news mis-stated that Occupy Denver successfully put Initiative 300 on the ballot for May.  The correct attribution goes to Denver Homeless Out Loud: https://denverhomelessoutloud.org/

There was a sit-down meeting October 7th.  He has had several conversation with Janet since then.  He has repeatedly reneged on his agreements.  Today, they told us they ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT RENOUNCE THE URBAN CAMPING BAN.  That is what they MUST do to end the boycott.

This was the proposed letter:

To:  The Honorable Mayor Michael Hancock, City and County of Denver

Members, City Council, City and County of Denver

Date:

Subject:  Repeal of the Urban Camping Ban

We the undersigned representatives of the CBC Restaurant Corp., dba Corner Bakery Cafe, do hereby publicly acknowledge the negative impacts of the Sit And Lie ordinances promoted by the Downtown Denver Business Partnership in the City and County of Denver in 2012.  Given the fact that we were active dues paying members of the DDBP, we were complicit in these legislative efforts to eliminate panhandling on the 16th Street Mall.

Additionally, we recognize that accurate analytical studies have determined that Denver’s Sit and Lie ordinances, as well as those being modeled after it, have caused serious implications beyond the 16th Street Mall and have affected communities city-wide.  This includes millions of dollars a year in resources “sweeping” humans to “move along” instead of providing for their basic needs.   Instead of investing these monies into long term solutions (including temporary public camping, tiny home communities and land trusts), the City has focused on criminalizing humans for surviving in public spaces.

We acknowledge that inhumane conditions in Denver have been enhanced by our callous methods to criminalize humans attempting to survive.  Our deafness to issues like human trafficking and domestic violence have helped to silence the voices of the most afflicted in this community.  Additionally, as a business we have been so out of touch with these issues that we internally applied the provisions of the Urban Camping Ban to our own hiring practices.

As a corporation that has demanded publically the same rights as human beings, we repent of our behaviour that has inflicted uncountable damage to the Denver Community.  We recognize that in our efforts to become a large corporation, we have acted without concern to those whom we depend on to profit upon.  As our own employees are members of the worker class that is criminalized for not being able to meet the profit margins of real estate investment corporations.

We now humbly submit to the public record that our intentional actions are reprehensible and that we must break away from our past behaviours.  It is why we call upon the City of Denver and the member businesses that compose the Downtown Denver Business Improvement District to join us in immediately changing course.  By focusing on social responsibility that allow all of our workers living wages, a right to rest, and dignity for all; CBC Restaurants hopes to redeem itself of its participation in the criminal legislation it helped push through.  We earnestly recognize the damages our actions have taken and we call on Denver business to join us is pushing for the reversal of these inhumane policies with the vigor that we got them enacted.

Sincerely,

Frank G Paci
