Germany's President Frank-Walter Steinmeier visited one of Berlin's six new COVID-19 vaccination centres on Monday. The vaccination centre in question is located at the Treptow Arena events space. Steinmeier's visit to the centre coincided with the European Medicines Agency's (EMA) green-light decision for the rollout of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine to all member states. Health Senator Dilek Kalayci and Berlin Mayor Michael Muller were also given the tour. Following the tour, Steinmeier said he was "pleased that the vaccination will begin." "Every vaccination is a small step in the direction of normality, that we all wish for. But of course, the start of the vaccination is not the end of the pandemic," Steinmeier warned. The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine received approval from the US Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) and the UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Authority (MHRA) earlier in December. A new spark of worry has been triggered across the EU following the discovery of a new strain of COVID-19 in the UK which is reported to have increased transmissibility, with many countries choosing to implement travel bans to help contain the spread of the new strain of the virus. --- SOT, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, German President (German): "Today is a significant day in the fight against the coronavirus. Today, the European Drug Authorities, will permit the first vaccine Europe wide, for all the European Union. We expect within the hour, decisions after the confirmation through the European Commission, that the way will be free, for the beginning of the vaccination inside of Europe. And of course, also in Germany. I am pleased to be here today, at the biggest vaccine centre in Berlin. Together with the Mayor of Berlin and Health Senator, with the project leader for the Berlin vaccine centre, Mr Broemme, we had an impressive tour."
