Their traditional lands, prior to invasion, bordered the Yuba and Feather Rivers. They were nearly destroyed during the “California Genocide”, in the latter half of the 19th century. “The Yahi People”, were the southernmost portion of the Yana Peoples. They were hunter-gatherers who lived in small egalitarian bands without centralized political authority, were reclusive and fiercely defended their territory of mountain canyons. The Yana were composed of four groups: the Northern Yana, the Central Yana, the Southern Yana and the Yahi. The Yahi were friendly with the other Yana, the Nomlaki and the Wintun Peoples.. and often hunted and camped in Wintun territory. On August 29th 1911, a tired, starving, frightened man left the forests of his Yahi homeland and wandered into an Oroville, California, slaughterhouse in search of food. He had been living alone in hiding, terrified of the white men who had murdered his people and taken over his land. When he was discovered, the sheriff put him in jail because, he did not know what to do with this man. Ishi ( 1861 – March 25th 1916) was the last known member of the Native American Yahi People from the present-day state of California, in the United States. The rest of the Yahi (as well as many members of their parent tribe, the Yana) were killed in the “California Genocide”, in the 19th century. ------------------------------------------------- I claim no ownership of any of the clips, video and music expressed in this video...and employ my borrowing of them with much respect and thanks.
