The hygroscopic and conductive metals, especially barium, is linked to an integrated system that involves the use of AWACS aircraft, satellites in geostationary orbit and ground VLF and ELF radars. The AWACS are provided since 2003 through a contract with the MITRE society, sophisticated electronic devices that permits to see the area in three-dimensional. This is the RFMP Project, a program based precisely on the connection between barium salts and specific requirementsrelated to communications by means of radars and satellites, capable of scanning and mapping entire regions for strategic purposes.

The project of the U.S. Navy RFMP, or "Radio Frequency Mission Planner," is the name given to a system group of computer programs. One of the sub-program in this system is the VRTPE that lets you see, displayed on a screen, battlefield in a three-dimensional configuration. RFMP depends on satellites to obtain and upload images of the ground combat and then combine them with the images taken on the ground, thus producing three-dimensional representations. The system RFMP properly works only on the water and along shorelines, but not on land masses, because the radar in order to operate at its best, needs particular atmospheric conditions. The military has solved this problem by employing squadrons of planes spreading into the atmosphere a mixture of barium salts which creates a channel for radio frequencies. This produces an environment suitable for transmitting radio waves to the system RFMP/VRTPE.
