INCREDIBLE Discoveries Made In Water

With 71% of our earth covered in water, it seems like a very obvious place to hide things, toss things, lose things and sometimes to even close or start a new chapter in one’s life. You know that part in the movie when the wedding ring is removed from the ring finger and it’s tossed into the canal, ocean, river – wherever! Where it becomes interesting, is when those items are finally discovered…
6 - Lost and found…
What began as a rather exciting discovery, had a not so exciting ending. Sonar equipment picked up a sunken airplane in Lake Norman, North Carolina. It was a bit odd, as there had been no reports of missing planes or crashes and the plane was empty. Of course, theories and speculations ran wild, until the truth was discovered, leaving everyone a little disappointed. Barbara Anderson came forward, saying the plane belonged to her. The reason it was in the lake was because the locking gear had not been engaged properly, and the plane had simply sunk.
5 - Blast from the past…
Thanks to falling water levels of several lakes located in Northern California, we have been able to find some incredible things. For example, the foundations of an entire old gold-mining town turned up in Folsom Lake. This town was founded in the 1840’s by Mormon prospectors who called it Mormon Island. Other lakes that had amazing discoveries included Shasta Lake, Don Pedro Lake and Lake Oroville – who all revealed historic finds, like gold mines, jails and even bridges. There were so many historical items washing ashore that looters tried to cash in. Park rangers had their hands full trying to control the looters.
4 - Secrets revealed…
Lake Nacogdoches is located in Texas and in 2011 a piece of the space shuttle Columbia was discovered, thanks to the drought that had dropped the lake’s water levels drastically. Columbia blew up when heading back into the earth’s atmosphere, with tragically, no survivors. The piece that turned up was the power reactant storage and distribution system. This was one of 18 that were on the shuttle.
3 - Treasure Hunt…
Not the kind of treasure we’d hoped for, but Echo Park Lake in LA was recently drained and there was quite a lot to come out of it. In fact, they made a rather extensive list. Items included 20 park trash cans – did people throw them in the lake? 36 construction cones, 7 trolleys, 3 portable radios, an entire pay phone, 6 skateboards, a toilet, 2 boats, 20 Frisbee, 2 guns, 6 office chairs – some people clearly hated their chairs, toys, debris and the regular rubbish one would expect. Considering the lake is only 29-acres, that’s a rather extensive find, wouldn’t you agree?
2 - An incredible find…
We’re in Paris next, as workers drained the Canal Saint-Martin, a centuries old canal that existed thanks to Napoleon who commissioned it to be built in 1802. The purpose of the canal was to supply drinking water to the city. It’s now one of the dirtiest canals in Paris, and has to be cleaned out every now and again. The last time it was cleaned was in 2001, and what they found in there in 2016 was quite something! Yes, of course they found the regular debris, cans, bottles and so on – but there was so much more that crowds would gather to find out what would be found next! Bicycles by the dozen, mopeds, boom boxes, ancient cameras, too many cell phones to count and even an artifact from WW1! All the fish were removed to safety, and officials are imploring residents to stop filling the canal with garbage, and hopefully in a few years – people can swim in there again. I have a feeling that’s wishful thinking.
1 - History repeating itself…
In it’s heyday, Bombay beach in California was considered as the "California Riviera.” It was during the 40’s and 50’s that this beach town was thriving and full of people, fun and life! However, chemicals from a farm runoff changed all that. The animals didn’t make it and then in the 70’s a flood covered the whole area with water. The Salton Sea has been shrinking over the years, and has now revealed the houses and mobile homes that used to be brimming with activity. It’s got a definite post-apocalyptic feel to it. It will never return to its former glory, but people do love to visit this little ghost town
