Abstract
This article identifies adverse effects of non-ionizing non-visible radiation (hereafter called wireless radiation) reported in the premier biomedical literature. It emphasizes that most of the laboratory experiments conducted to date are not designed to identify the more severe adverse effects reflective of the real-life operating environment in which wireless radiation systems operate. Many experiments do not include pulsing and modulation of the carrier signal. The vast majority do not account for synergistic adverse effects of other toxic stimuli (such as chemical and biological) acting in concert with the wireless radiation. This article also presents evidence that the nascent 5G mobile networking technology will affect not only the skin and eyes, as commonly believed, but will have adverse systemic effects as well.

“Adverse Health Effects of 5G Mobile Networking Technology Under Real Life Conditions” identifies the wide-spectrum of adverse health effects of non-ionizing non-visible radiation and concludes that 5 G mobile networking technology will affect not only the skin and eyes, but will have adverse systemic effects as well. They state that 5G will increase the cell tower densities by an order of magnitude. Radiation could penetrate much deeper into a small animal in comparison to a human, because of the much smaller animal size. The researchers point out that most laboratory experiments were not designed to identify the more severe adverse effects reflective of real-life conditions. For example, they do not include the real-life pulsing and modulation of the carrier signal and do not reflect the real life exposures of various modulations. In addition, the vast majority of experiments do not account for synergistic adverse effects of other toxic stimuli with wireless radiation despite the reality that people are exposed to a myriad of toxic insults every day. Science has documented additive, synergistic, potentiative, and/or antagonistic effects created by the combination of exposures. Combined exposure to a toxic stimuli and wireless translates into much lower levels of tolerance for each toxic stimulus and the exposure limits for wireless radiation when examined in combination with other potentially toxic stimuli would be far lower for safety purposes than those derived from wireless radiation exposures in isolation.
The authors contend that almost all of the wireless radiation laboratory experiments that have been performed to date are flawed/limited with respect to showing the full adverse impact of the wireless radiation that would be expected under real-life conditions because they did not include signal information and only used single stressors. The researchers conclude that in aggregate, for the high frequency (radiofrequency-RF) part of the spectrum, currently published reviews show that RF radiation below the FCC guidelines can result in: carcinogenicity (brain tumors/glioma, breast cancer, acoustic neuromas, leukemia, parotid gland tumors), genotoxicity (DNA damage, DNA repair inhibition, chromatin structure), mutagenicity, teratogenicity, neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer’s Disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), neurobehavioral problems, autism, reproductive problems, pregnancy outcomes, excessive reactive oxygen species/oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis, blood-brain barrier disruption, pineal gland/melatonin production, sleep disturbance, headache, irritability, fatigue, concentration difficulties, depression, dizziness, tinnitus, burning and flushed skin, digestive disturbance, tremor, cardiac irregularities, adverse impacts on the neural, circulatory, immune, endocrine, and skeletal systems” and “from this perspective, RF is a highly pervasive cause of disease” (Kostoff et al., 2020)
“Towards 5G communication systems: Are there health implications?” is a research review detailing research findings that millimeter waves can alter gene expression, promote cellular proliferation and synthesis of proteins linked with oxidative stress, inflammatory and metabolic processes.” The researchers conclude, “available findings seem sufficient to demonstrate the existence of biomedical effects, to invoke the precautionary principle” (Di Ciaula 2018).
“Systematic Derivation of Safety Limits for Time-Varying 5G Radiofrequency Exposure Based on Analytical Models and Thermal Dose” documents how significant tissue heating can be generated by 5G technology’s rapid short bursts of energy. “The results also show that the peak-to-average ratio of 1,000 tolerated by the International Council on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection guidelines may lead to permanent tissue damage after even short exposures, highlighting the importance of revisiting existing exposure guidelines.” (Neufeld and Kuster 2018)
“The Human Skin as a Sub-THz Receiver – Does 5G Pose a Danger to It or Not?” and “The Modeling of the Absorbance of Sub-THz Radiation by Human Skin” are two papers by physicists presenting research that found higher 5G frequencies are intensely absorbed into human sweat ducts (in skin), at much higher absorption levels than other parts of our skin’s tissues (Betzalel 2017, Betzalel 2018). The researchers conclude, “we are raising a warning flag against the unrestricted use of sub-THz technologies for communication, before the possible consequences for public health are explored.”
“Exposure of Insects to Radio-Frequency Electromagnetic Fields from 2 to 120 GHz” published in Scientific Reports is the first study to investigate how insects (including the Western honeybee) absorb the higher frequencies (2 GHz to 120 GHz) to be used in the 4G/5G rollout. The scientific simulations showed increases in absorbed power between 3% to 370% when the insects were exposed to the frequencies. Researchers concluded, “This could lead to changes in insect behaviour, physiology, and morphology over time….” (Thielens 2018)

5G is the next generation of wireless technology – to be used for faster internet, the IOT (Internet of Things), smart cities and buildings, Smart Grid, transport infrastructures, monitoring traffic and vehicles, smart street lights, waste management, connected and autonomous vehicles, drones, augmented and virtual reality applications, advanced manufacturing and for interconnecting new technologies and networks etc. 5G technology is being rolled out across the world without any pre-testing for short or long-term health effects.
Despite evidence that existing wireless technology causes adverse health effects, our governments and decision makers are sanctioning what scientists and experts warn will be a serious health crisis.
The 5G network will involve the installation of millions of extra antennae, to be placed closer to homes, schools, hospitals etc. emitting harmful toxic RF radiation constantly.
5G will substantially increase exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields RF-EMF, that has been proven to be harmful for humans and the environment.
Over 50,000 wireless transmitting satellites are also being deployed in space.
The Industry and Governments Are Aware of ‘Significant Concern’
Included in a 31 page document requested by The European Parliament Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) on 5G Deployment across Europe, USA and Asia, the following section is included (page 11). Despite this ‘significant concern‘, deployment of 5G is still going ahead.
5G will not replace existing telecommunications, but will in part, build on existing 4G networks. In some cases, it will use existing 4G equipment and infrastructure. In other cases it will be a separate set of equipment alongside 4G. 3G and 4G is still being rolled out in many places.
5G will use various different frequencies
The 5G deployment proposes to add frequencies in the microwave spectrum in the low- (0.6 GHz – 3.7 GHz), mid- (3.7GHz – 24 GHz), and high-band frequencies (24 GHz and higher) for faster communications. In some cases it will include the higher millimeter wave frequencies never before used for internet and communications technology. Millimeter waves are in the High Frequency Range and these higher frequencies do not travel far and are blocked by buildings, so the high-band systems will have to use a dense network of fixed antennae outdoors every 300 meters as well as indoor systems. These will be placed on existing infrastructure, street furniture, lamp posts , poles and even under manholes. 5G will provide faster speeds (up to 100 times) and higher capacity transmissions to carry the massive amount of data that will be generated from the Internet of Things (IoT), driverless cars, smart cities and towns, traffic management, in hospitals and businesses, drones etc.
5G technology, like the 2G, 3G, 4G telecommunications systems, has not had pre-market testing for short or long-term health effects despite the fact that people will be exposed continuously to this further radiation. The addition of these 5G radiation frequencies to an already complex mix of wireless frequencies, will contribute to a negative public health outcome from both physical and mental health perspectives.
Currently in Ireland five mobile and internet service providers have space on the country’s 3.6GHz spectrum band, which has been identified as a primary band suitable for the introduction of 5G in Europe. This is just the beginning, as further spectrum bands are to be auctioned in the near future – 700MHz and 26GHz. See ComReg website for more details.
NOTE: 5G is not the same as 5GHz. 5G stands for 5th Generation technology and will use different frequencies as mentioned above. However, some existing wifi routers will indicate they use 5G – this is in fact 5GHz and NOT 5G. 5GHz is one of two frequency signals (as well as 2.4GHz) used in most modern wireless wifi routers/modems. As far as we are concerned, whether it is 5G or not, all wifi and wireless frequencies are biologically damaging. It is important to reduce your exposure to wireless microwave radiation, so disable one or both frequencies 2.4GHz and 5GHz on your router and computer and turn router and devices off at night. More Microwaves plus Millimeter Waves
5G, 5th Generation technology will employ various frequencies – low, mid-range and high – microwaves AND millimeters waves.

Some research on non-thermal effects has shown that millimeter wavelengths target cell membranes and have adverse biological effects as well as clinical effects such as cataracts, immune system alterations and physiological effects on the heart and blood pressure. Betzalal et al (2018) have demonstrated that the sweat glands which are coiled structures in the upper layers of the skin can act as antenna receiver for 5G sub-THz band wavelengths.

Wildlife and the Environment
Environmental effects of existing RF radiation have also been ignored Wildlife/Environment. 5G will massively increase the microwave and millimeter wave radiation in our environment, and will have a detrimental effect on wildlife, birds, bees and trees. 5G will substantially increase exposure to radio–frequency electromagnetic fields RF-EMF, that has already been proven to be harmful for humans, animals and the environment.

Are Trees being Cut Down for 5G Roll-Out?
Reports are coming from all over the world and Ireland of trees and hedgerows being cut down and removed for the roll-out of 5G. While trees and hedges might be cut for various reasons, it is important to note that trees and foliage can interfere with and impede RF signals. Higher frequencies have more difficulty passing through, so therefore any obstructions will need to be removed for maximum efficiency.

Thousands of 5G Satellites in Space
As well as 5G on earth, there are plans to put over 50,000 wireless and 5G transmitting satellites in space. In September 2017 the EU 5G Appeal, signed by more than 180 scientists and doctors from 35 nations was submitted to the European Commission demanding a moratorium on the increase of cell/mobile antennas for planned 5G expansion. Concerns over health effects from higher radiation exposure include potential neurological impacts, infertility, and cancer.
