The region between the Earth and the Moon has been busy this month. Not only one but three asteroids passed incredibly close to our planet since the start of April. Two of them flew past Earth on April 3rd and April 5th at 0.3 and 0.2 lunar distances. The third one flew past Earth at a distance of 0.18 lunar distances on April 1st. The asteroids were only discovered a few hours before their closest approach to our planet. We have been lucky so far but finding these at the last minute is getting concerning. 1) Asteroid: 2020 GY1 Earth Flyby: April 5, 2020 Distance from Earth: 0.21 LD = 80,782 km (50,196 mi) Estimated size: 13 m - 28 m (42-92 ft) https://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/sbdb.cgi?sst... 2) Asteroid: 2020 GH Earth Flyby: April 3, 2020 Distance from Earth: 0.33 LD = 125,662 km (78,082 mi) Estimated size: 5 m - 10 m (16-32 ft) https://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/sbdb.cgi?sst... 3) Asteroid: 2020 GO1 Earth Flyby: April 1, 2020 Distance from Earth: 0.18 LD = 68,815 km (42,759 mi) Estimated size: 8 m - 17 m (26-56 ft) https://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/sbdb.cgi?sst... LD means "Lunar Distance." 1 LD = 384,401 km, the distance between Earth and the Moon. 1 LD also equals 0.00256 AU. https://cneos.jpl.nasa.gov/ca/ https://spaceweather.com/
