Hundreds of protesters defied the coronavirus lockdown in Beirut on Thursday holding a rally against financial turmoil which caused a crash of the national currency, the Lebanese pound. The demonstration took place for the second consecutive day as the local currency continues its sharp decline against the US Dollar. The activists were seen outside the Bank of Lebanon shouting slogans against the financial policies and continuing their march across the city, blocking several streets. A large contingent of riot police has been deployed in an attempt to take control of the protest. Protests in the country broke out in October against government corruption, as Lebanon was facing its worst economic crisis in decades, with soaring unemployment and the local currency losing value against the dollar. The demonstrations stopped with the curfew imposed by the authorities due to coronavirus pandemic.
