It never ceases to amaze how barbaric, beastly, cruel, brutal, sadistic, savage, violent, vicious, ruthless, monstrous, inhuman, evil, heinous, merciless, remorseless, heartless, cold-blooded, crooked, immoral, foul, wrongful, vile, dishonourable, horrible, corrupt, depraved, malicious, despicable, shocking, atrocious, brutal, murderous, abominable, disgusting, hateful, contemptible, loathsome, repugnant, gruesome, sickening, nauseating, hideous, horrid, gross, appalling, terrible, horrendous, intolerable, shameful, disgraceful, unworthy, immoral, undignified, debasing, indecent, grotesque, horrific, repulsive, repellent, awful, terrible, detestable, malevolent, execrable, teratoid the cops can be. Take this footage for example that comes from Belgrade, Serbia on the 7th of July 2020, during the second night of protests, over the return of strict lockdown measures to Serbia, a decision taken by the serbian president, Aleksandar Vučić, an ultranationalist populist conservative politician. Regardless of whether you agree or disagree with the reason behind the protests, the fact remains. Policemen ruthlessly and repeatedly hitting in such a brutal manner several people just sitting on a bench, offering no resistance, are nothing but criminals dressed in uniform. We often hear that cops are here to protect, that they are just working people like the rest of us and when people complain, condemn, defy or react against police injustice and brutality, then they say that, no matter what, the policemen are the ones keeping the peace, the ones that we turn to when something bad happens to us. But the question is would you ask for help from the thug that just attacked you so viciously, that at some point he grabs his baton with his two hands to injure you even harder? And if -according to the cliche narrative- “not all cops are bad”, then why do the “good cops” tolerate and cover up the crimes of their colleagues? And how come their beatings, the infliction of injuries with their plastic bullets, their batons and their feasts, the asphyxiation caused by their teargas, and the firing of their pistols is considered lawful if you are a riot policeman and you are getting paid to act as a criminal against other people?
