Member of Belarusian opposition's Coordination Council Maria Kolesnikova arrived for questioning at the Investigative Committee of Belarus in Minsk on Thursday over her role in the council that aims to facilitate a transition of power in the country. Kolesnikova said the criminal probe into the Coordination Council was “an instrument to pressure the civil society”. “Once again we can see that it is an instrument to pressure the civil society. The authorities close their ears to their own people. And so, they use violence," she commented. Other members of the council, including Nobel Prize-winning author Svetlana Alexievich, have also been summoned for questioning. On Tuesday two of its members were given short prison terms for organising unauthorised demonstrations. Exiled opposition leader and former presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, who initiated the creation of the organisation, has said that the Coordination Council is vital to establish a dialogue with the authorities. Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko last week ordered a criminal probe into the council, arguing it was "an attempt to seize power."
