The former president of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), Lamine Diack, was sentenced to two years in prison by a court in Paris on Wednesday, after being found guilty of corruption. Lawyers for the 87-year-old, who was found guilty of taking bribes in related to the Russian doping scandal, said that they would appeal the verdict. "We immediately inform you that Mr. Diack's defence will appeal this decision. This decision is unfair and inhumane. It is unfair because we saw that the court sought to be "politically correct," wanted to use Mr Diack as a scapegoat," explained Simon Ndiaye, one of Diack's lawyers. Diack was sentenced to four years in prison, including two years suspended, for his involvement in a corruption network intended to hide doping by athletes. The Senegalese national, who was in charge of the IAAF (now World Athletics), between 1999 and 2015, was charged with "giving and receiving bribes", "breach of trust" and "organised money laundering." Prosecutors alleged he solicited over €3 million ($5,589,985) from athletes suspected of doping, covering up the allegations and allowing them to continue competing, including in the 2012 London Olympics.
