Police used water cannons against environmental protesters in the Dannenrod Forest on Saturday, as efforts to block the clearance of part of the forest for motorway construction continued. Activists from the 'Ende Gelande' environmental group tried to block access to the police with wooden barricades, but they were removed by the authorities with some protesters subsequently being detained amid scuffles. "We are here today as 'Ende Gelande' to fight for this healthy forest that's still being destroyed for a highway in 2020 in the middle of the climate crisis, which is absolutely insane," 'Ende Gelande' spokesperson Ronja Weil said. The demonstrators could be seen holding various banners with messages such as "When politicians fail to help, block 'Danni'" and "No borders, no nations, no deforestation." For more than a year, activists from environmental groups have been protesting against the construction of the A49 motorway project, a proposed new section of a motorway linking north and central Hesse. The part of the forest near Homberg (Ohm) where protests are taking place is scheduled to be cleared before late February. *SOUNDBITES* SOT, Ronja Weil, 'Ende Gelande' spokesperson (German): "We are here today as 'Ende Gelande' to fight for this healthy forest that's still being destroyed for a highway in 2020 in the middle of the climate crisis, which is absolutely insane and we are here to fight for a different kind of mobility, as a way of mobility that is in solidarity with people in the Global South and that is sustainable and we are going to show how effective climate protection works today."
