Tokyo 2021 The Olympic Games operations director Pierre Ducrey announced that athletes hoping to compete in this summer's Tokyo Olympics will not need to be vaccinated in order to take part. The announcement came during a press conference held in Tokyo and attended by international partners via videocall on Wednesday, during which, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) unveiled the first in a series of COVID-19 'playbooks' aimed to safely carry out the summer Olympic Games in 2021. "In line with what was discussed with the NOCs [National Olympic Committees] in the briefing we conducted at the end of January, we will not be having vaccination as an obligation for participation to the Games," announced Ducrey. The Tokyo Olympics are set to begin on July 23 of 2021 after being postponed last year following the coronavirus outbreak. Rumours that the Games would be delayed further have been rife, but recent assurances from officials have confirmed that the Games will finally go ahead this summer with some restrictions in place. The temporary set of rules include a mandatory coronavirus test 14 days prior to arrival in Japan and another upon arrival in the country. "February 2020, vaccines were a distant hope, in February 2021, they are a reality. Today more than 60 countries around the world are implementing vaccination programs, and the number set to receive jabs will increase exponentially between now and the Games," stated International Paralympic Committee (IPC) communications officer Craig Spence.
